Vote John Shelton for a Better Plymouth

About Me

I am originally from Thomasville, North Carolina. After graduating from Thomasville High School, I attended UNC-Chapel Hill, where I majored in Communications and minored in Geology. I moved to California after graduating and worked briefly in the film industry before deciding to return to North Carolina to become a police officer. In 2010, I returned to school to get my Masters of Science in Leadership and Organizational Change from Pfeiffer University, while continuing to work full time as a law enforcement officer.

I spent 28 years in law enforcement and retired as a Major with the Vance County Sheriff’s Office. During my career, I served in many capacities including patrol officer, gang investigator, criminal investigator specializing in fraud cases, facility manager, fleet manager, and jail administrator, among others. I taught use of force classes in police academies and during in service training since 2005. As the jail administrator in Vance County, I managed a budget of $4.2 million.

After retiring in 2022, I was recruited to work for Pay Tel Communications. I am a project manager/onboarding specialist. In addition to providing communication services for detainees in county jails, our mission is to reduce recidivism through education and resource availability. I regularly travel to county jails throughout the Southeast working with the jail staffs and the detainees to ensure they know how to use our products and services.

I moved to Plymouth in April 2025 as my son was about to graduate from a Catholic high school in Raleigh. He will be attending college and playing football. Upon my first visit to Plymouth, I saw a lot of raw potential. Real estate prices are low and there are several available commercial lots along Water Street. With the proper planning and support from the Town Council, downtown can thrive.

When elected to represent Ward Three, I will push for the council to develop a vision for the Water Street/Main Street corridor. If we can bring people from other communities into Plymouth, we can have new businesses in town. New business equals more job opportunities for residents. Those businesses will also collect and pay taxes that the town will benefit from. That additional revenue can be used to continue to improve and revitalize the town.

A rising tide lifts all boats.

Let’s do this!!!
